Inside Our Two-Night Investigation of Houston's Hotel ICON

By Ghost Texas · Published

Ghost Texas spent two nights at Hotel ICON in downtown Houston, investigating a location known for stories about unusual sounds, apparitions and uneasy overnight stays. This trailer is a preview of that investigation—not the full episode—and introduces the questions we brought to the building.

From Union National Bank to Hotel ICON

Before it became a hotel, the property served as the Union National Bank. That history is part of the reason the building attracts so many stories. The hotel retains architectural reminders of its banking past, including the vault area, and a number of the reported haunting stories connect themselves to the building's earlier use. We are careful to distinguish the history we can document from anecdotes passed along by guests and staff.

The people interviewed for our investigation described events ranging from unexplained voices to seeing a figure dressed in a business suit. One guest recalled an unsettling experience near a window; another spoke about sounds when alone in a room. Those are the witnesses' accounts, not events our cameras independently verified.

What Happened Near Room 415?

Early in the investigation, Patrick noticed elevated readings on a K2 electromagnetic-field meter. Our team compared different spots around the room and hallway rather than assuming a reading was paranormal. The instrument reacted more strongly in certain areas, including around room 415, but the response was not uniform across the floor.

Electrical infrastructure and other environmental conditions can affect an EMF meter. An unusual reading may help identify something worth examining, but it does not establish the presence of a ghost. The trailer sets up those observations and the questions surrounding them.

Spirit-Box Sessions and the Estes Method

The team also held spirit-box sessions in the former bank building. During one session, the crew asked about people who might once have worked there. The team heard possible words and names and later discussed their possible connections to local history.

We experimented with the Estes Method as well, in which one investigator listens to audio while others ask questions. An apparent response can seem striking in context, but radio fragments, interpretation, coincidence and the timing of the questions all matter. Our goal in the full investigation is to show enough of each session for viewers to assess it independently.

A Second Night in the Penthouse

On the second night, the hotel's general manager and family joined part of the investigation. In the penthouse, one participant described a feeling of weight on his shoulders while the group used additional equipment, including a thermal camera. Later, several people reported noticing a dark, human-shaped area on the thermal display. The team acknowledged that the effect was not clearly preserved in the downloaded footage. We are not presenting it as a confirmed apparition.

Is Hotel ICON really haunted?

Hotel ICON has a reputation for reported paranormal activity, but the stories and equipment responses shown in this investigation do not prove a supernatural cause. The central question remains open: what explains the experiences, and what can the recordings actually establish?

Where did Ghost Texas investigate?

The team investigated Hotel ICON in downtown Houston, Texas, a historic hotel occupying the former Union National Bank building. The investigation was conducted with access to particular areas over two nights, not every room in the hotel.
